It is fresh fig season and that gives me an excuse to have figs at all time of the day. Baked figs and feta is a uniquely-delicious breakfast spread. I know you may be asking what does Black Mission figs have to do with breakfast? The answer – everything.
Imagine fig jam slathered on whole wheat toast, only way better. What makes the baked Black Mission figs and feta breakfast spread better? Here are five reasons:
- It is warm and gooey.
- Jam is often full of sugar, this spread is Mediterranean Diet compliant without sugar.
- The roasted feta is spreadable and slightly salty adding a rich complexity.
- Balsamic vinegar is reported to have health benefits. Health benefits include, but not limited to, reduced hypertension, controlled blood-pressure while providing antioxidants.
- If your lucky enough, there are FRESH FIGS!!!!
Black Mission Figs
You can use any type of figs, but I use Black Mission figs in this recipe. A richer taste than many other figs, Black Missions have a jammy texture with an underlying berry flavor. Roasting the figs with the a dark fig balsamic vinegar creates a syrupy liqueur perfect for breakfast. Just writing about it makes me want to reach for my cup of black java. A full-flavored dark coffee is the perfect complement to the jammy sweetness of the Black Mission fig and feta breakfast spread.
A Balanced Breakfast
The sweetness of the roasted fresh figs achieve a delicious balance with the acidity of the balsamic and saltiness of the feta. A natural sweetness it differs from a dessert spread. It will leave you fulfilled.
The best part is you do not have to wait for a weekend or a holiday to make this breakfast spread. Since the season for fresh figs is short you might want to take advantage of any morning to enjoy it. Such an easy dish to make. Five minutes to prep and in the oven it goes. Cooking while you are getting ready, be sure to save a few minutes to eat it. Grab your coffee and spread some of that delicious goodness onto your wheat bagel. You will not be sorry you did.
