Last week, the Mediterranean Diet has again been named the best overall diet. After tying for first in 2018, the Mediterranean Diet has been named the overall best diet since 2019!

The Quick History of the Best Diet for 2025

In 1975, Dr. Ancel Keys, a biologist, and his wife, Margaret, a chemist studied the diet and made it popular. After conducting a Seven Countries study, Dr. Keys came to find that the people of Crete were less likely to die from high cholesterol and other related diseases. Despite having 40 percent of the calories come from fat, and drinking red wine daily, people are living longer. Excuse me, eating extra virgin olive oil and drinking red wine? Si, per favore! In 1993, Oldways along with Harvard School of Public Health and the World Health Organization formalized Dr. Keys’ study and now we have the Mediterranean Diet.

What is the Mediterranean Diet?

Oldways describes the Mediterranean Diet as a way of eating based on the traditional foods of the countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The Mediterranean Diet is not a diet, as in “go on a diet,” even though it is a great way to lose weight or improve your health. Rather, it is a lifestyle – including foods, activities, meals with friends and family, and wine in moderation with meals. The focus is on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, nuts, legumes, lean proteins from fish and poultry, and good fats from olive oil. Traditional cheeses, that are not overly processed, should be used sparingly. Sweets and red meats are limited to special occasions. A diet of abundance rather the deprivation, it is no surprise that the Mediterranean Diet is the Best Diet for 2025. It is enjoyable to eat food that is good and good for you!
